REFERENCIAS SOBRE MARKOS J. MAMALAKIS Y SU LIBRO "THE GROWTH AND STRUCTURE OF THE CHILEAN ECONOMY, FROM INDEPENDENCE TO ALLENDE"

Mr. Markos J. Mamalakis

This volume is one in a series of studies supported by the Economic Growth Center, an activity of the Yale Departament of Economics. The research program include field of invetigation in developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The significant though uneven economic climb of Chile between independence in 1818 and the military junta of 1973 was associated with pioneer social and political progress -and retrogresion. With its US $ 800 per capita income, it has been in the vanguard of the moderately developed nations. As the rays of Chile's proud and independet star came to be a source of universal ligth, its experience became the object of intense international interest and cuyriosity.

To explain the record and meet the challenge of unveiling the country's economic morphology, this study concentrates on identifyng the features of production, distribution and capital formation and the interactions amog them. Development is considerated part of and the consequence of underlyng changes in production, distribution and capital formation. This approacht is, in the Mamalakis opinion, unique. Treatment of production, distribution and capital formation for the 1840-1930 and 1930-1973 periods divides the survey into two parts, but the time distinction has necessarily been blurred in the chapters on sectoral production.

Markos Mamalakis has wrote, also, a monograph tittled: "Historical Statistics of Chile, 1840-1965", 14 vols. You can see a copy of these material in the Biblioteca Nacional of Santiago de Chile.

During the visit of Mamalakis from 1964 to 1966 to the Instituto de Economía of the University of Chile, provided a unique setting to undertaken research to develop and exchanges ideas, to teach, and to make lifelong friedns. In the course of my visits between 1964 and 1972 countless private and government officials, from Antofagasta to Punta Arenas, asssisted and guided to Mamalakis and answered his questions. Specials tahnks from M. Mamalakis to the members of the National Planning Office of the Presidency of the Republic (ODEPLAN), for their material statistical help and the Chilean Development Corporation (CORFO) and his affiliates for providing essential information and faciliting the Mamalakis work throughout the country.

The research on services was partially carried out with assistance from the Social Science Research Council and the Graduate School of the University of Wiisconsin at Milawauhee. Valuable support has also been provided by the UWM Center for Latin American studies.

Mamlakis has received useful comments from economy expert as: Carlos Díaz-Alejandro, Howard S. Ellis, Arnold Harberger, Simon Kuznets (Economy Nobel Award), Gustav Ranis, Lloyd G.
